This guide has been designed to assist with initial steps of diagnosing an issue with your winch.
We recommend consulting a qualified mechanic or auto electrician if you are not confident in carrying out any of the steps within this guide.
My Winch Is Not Working At All
*This includes your solenoid clicking but no action or noise from the winch itself.
1. Ensure your isolator is switched to the ON position.
2 Is there power on both sides of your isolator?
- Using a test light or multimeter, check for power flow.
- Yes? move on to step 3
- No? You have a failed isolator.
3. Try using both wired and wireless remotes. Is the result the same?
- Yes? Move on to step 4
- No? Then you have a fault with your remote.
4. Is there power/signal between the control box and winch when the in/out buttons are pressed on the remote?
- Using a test light or multimeter, check for power flow on each of the 3 leads.
- Yes? Move on to step 5
- No? It is likely a failed solenoid.
5. Is there power going to your winch motor?
- Ensure all terminals are clean and tight.
6. Have you followed the instructions on where to earth the winch and control box to?
- Winch earth to battery, control box to chassis.
7. Do you have a sufficiently sized battery?
- Our 4x4 range requires a minimum of a 760CCA Battery. Our EWB9500-Q Evo and all winches 15,000lb and above require a minimum of a 1000CCA Battery.
If none of these steps have helped you, please get in contact with our technical team: info@runvawinch.com.au and provide information of your issue along with a copy of your original purchase invoice.
My Winch Is Only Working In One Direction
1. Is the winch only working in 1 direction with both remotes?
- Yes? Move on to step 2
- No? You have a faulty remote.
2. Are all 4 winch motor terminals clean and tight?
- Yes? Move on to step 3
- No? Clean and spray with terminal cleaner then re-affix cables and tighten.
3. Pull about 1m of rope out and then re-engage the clutch.
4. Swap the RED and YELLOW cables at the motor.
5. Turn the isolator to the ON position and use the remote to winch IN and then OUT. (NOTE: The winch will be running in reverse so will be going the opposite way to the controls).
6. Does the winch now work both ways?
- Yes? You have a faulty solenoid.
- No? Move on to step 7
7. Check your earth for both control box and winch as well as ensuring your battery is a minimum of 760CCA and the battery is in good condition.

My Motor Is Making Noise But Nothing Is Happening
1. Have you disengaged the freespool?
- Yes? Move on to step 2
- No? Engage the clutch fully and then try using your winch again.
2. Is your winch mounted the correct way around?
- Check that the motor is on the drivers side, gearbox is on the passenger side, and rope is feeding from the bottom of the drum.
3. Check the winch brushes. Remove the end cap from the motor by undoing and removing the 2 long bolts. Check the spring retainers and brushes themselves for inconsistent wear. Also check the seals and overall condition of the motor (check for rust, corrosion etc).
4. Time for a service! If you have checked off everything in this guide and you are still having issues, we recommend having the winch serviced by a qualified mechanic. You can find a list of our dealers online.
If none of these steps have helped you, please get in contact with our technical team: info@runvawinch.com.au and provide information of your issue along with a copy of your original purchase invoice.
My Winch Is Not Holding Under Load
1. Ensure that the clutch handle is fully engaged.
2. Is the rope feeding from the bottom of the drum?
- This is super important. The rope feed direction is paramount to the brake working correctly.
3. If steps 1 and 2 are correct, then you will need to have your winch serviced and the brake inspected.
If none of these steps have helped you, please get in contact with our technical team: info@runvawinch.com.au and provide information of your issue along with a copy of your original purchase invoice.
My Wireless Remote Is Not Working
1. Is the wireless remote on? Make sure you are holding down the power button for 3-5 seconds until the red light stays on.
2. Is the wired remote working?
- Yes? You have a faulty wireless remote
- No? Please refer to the “MY WINCH IS NOT WORKING AT ALL” section of this guide.
2. Is the power light on?
- Yes? Continue on to step 3
- No? Replace the batteries (A23) and re-pair the remote. You can find out how to pair your remote using our “WIRELESS PAIRING GUIDE”
3. Re-pair the remote using the “WIRELESS PAIRING GUIDE” and test to see if the winch works.
- Yes? We have had the odd instance where the remote unpairs itself (usually after a battery change)
- No? Move on to step 4
4. If you cannot get your wireless to work after following the previous steps, it is likely you have a failed remote or receiver.
If none of these steps have helped you, please get in contact with our technical team: info@runvawinch.com.au and provide information of your issue along with a copy of your original purchase invoice.
My Winch Is Running Slowly Or Heating Up
1. Check your terminals and connections from the battery all the way to the winch. All terminals and connections should be clean and tight.
2. Check your battery. Your winch requires a minimum of a 760CCA battery to power the winch (1000CCA for the EWB9500-Q EVO, and all winches 15000lb and above). Check to make sure you have a healthy battery as well!
3. Remove the end cap from the motor via the 2 long bolts and inspect internally to see what condition your brushes and springs are in. If there is uneven wear of foreign debris, this will affect the performance and temperature of the winch.
4. Perform a full service of the winch including motor, gearbox and drum. If you are not confident in doing this, we would recommend having a 4wd mechanic or auto electrician do it for you.
